These "heavy ones" among horses often weigh over 1,000 kilograms (2,200 pounds), have nerves of steel and a lot of power. They certainly did not just draw plough and harrow. Did you know that 11,734 horses worked underground in the mines within the area of responsibility of the Prussian Superior Board of Mines in 1913? Or that thousands of heavy Clydesdales and Suffolk Punches did the shunting service at English goods stations up to the 1960ies? Or that the Schultheiss brewery in Berlin quenched people’s thirst with the help of 826 horses and 544 carts in 1924?
The Carthorse Museum at the ‚Alte Salzstrasse“ (Old Salt Road) deals with this area of the working world. |
