This museum of local history is dedicated to the history of the former ‘Freien Reichsgrafschaft Rantzau’ (Free Kingdom’s County Rantzau). The town of Barmstedt was its center. The collection consists of a great variety of objects. They cover different topics from pre- and early history to the present. The main emphasis is put on the history of the town. Dealing with the topic of trade, the shoemaker’s trade is stressed because similar to the town of Preetz (Ostholstein) Barmstedt was a famous shoemakers’ town in the 19th century. The museum also has a representative collection of farm tools and household equipment.
