The Schleswig-Holstein State Library is a publicly accessible institution for the entire state of Schleswig-Holstein and its citizens. As a scientific regional library, it has the task of collecting, archiving, indexing, sustainably preserving, bibliographically verifying, making accessible to the public and communicating media as well as images, photographs, manuscripts and much more relating to the history, regional studies, tradition and culture of Schleswig-Holstein and its direct neighbouring areas, in particular from Denmark.

The collection is mainly dedicated to preserving and presenting pictures depicting the history and cultural history of Schleswig-Holstein, with a focus on topographical maps, portraits, pictures of special events, and brochures of traditional costumes and uniforms. The library also has a large collection of books, manuscripts, and music. Changing exhibitions are also on display.
