The visitor finds the Brahmshaus in the centre of the town of Heide at the corner of the streets Lüttenheid and Neue Anlage. It cannot be missed with its whitewashed walls, its steep-sloped roof, its large window front and the roses in bloom. Under the pointed gable at the front there is a plaque with a reference to the Brahms family, who owned the house from 1819 to 1887.
In 1987 the ‚Brahms-Gesellschaft Schleswig-Holstein’ (Brahms Association Schleswig-Holstein) was founded. It wants to keep the memory of the great composer in Heide because the ancestors of Johannes Brahms lived in the town. The Brahms-Gesellschaft bought the house in 1988 and started alterations one year later. In 1990 the house was opened to the public. It has turned into a place of great cultural attraction in a short time.
