Das heutige Dagebüll entstand 1978 aus der Zusammenlegung der selbstständigen Gemeinden Dagebüll, Fahretoft, Juliane-Marien-Koog und Waygaard. Früher war Dagebüll eine Westermarsch genannte Hallig, deren Bewohner um 1700 einen Freibrief erhielten und um 1704 das Land mit Deichen sichern konnten. Noch heute ist bei den ältesten Häusern zu erkennen, dass sie auf Warften gebaut wurden. Der Fährhafen im Ortsteil Dagebüll-Hafen bietet eine Schiffsverbindung im Linienverkehr zu den Inseln Föhr und Amrum. Auch kleine Frachtschiffe, Muschelkutter und sonstige Schiffe verkehren hier.
