The world-famous naval memorial of the Baltic seaside resort Laboe was built in the years 1927-1936. It is at the same time a memorial to people of all nations who died at sea and a memorial to peaceful shipping. The memorial has an 85 metre high tower, which visitors can climb up inside. It is situated close to the locks of Kiel Canal but on the opposite Eastern shore of the “Kieler Förde” (Kiel Firth).
There is an exhibition with model ships, maps, and dioramas on the history of merchant shipping and the navy in the “Historische Halle” (historical hall) at the Eastern side of the tower. The submarine U 995, which the visitors can enter, was put up on the beach immediately in front of the Laboe tower as a technical museum.
U 995 is a Type VII C/41 submarine that was used by the German navy during the Second World War. It went into service in September 1943 and completed nine enemy missions. Since 13 March 1972, the submarine has been docked at the foot of the navy memorial and used as a museum ship.
