From the locks in Holtenau, a district of Kiel on the North side of Kiel Canal, the international shipping traffic coming in and out of the locks can be watched. This historically important area is close to the old lighthouse and the recently restored warehouse at the entry of Kiel Canal into the ‘Kieler Förde’ (Kiel Firth).
There is a recently established exhibition on the canal on the lock grounds themselves. It presents the older and the more recent technology of the canal as well as information on canal events and on the history of Kiel Canal.
A visit of the site is only possible within guided tours. Old as well as new locks are shown during these.
