Located in the attic of the Tourist Information Centre, the „Inselmuseum“ gives information on the culture of the island, on its history and on the daily life of its inhabitants. The recently restored building, a Frisian thatched house, still shows many characteristics of the construction that is typical for the island. On the ground floor the Tourist Information centre is housed together with a conference room, which is also used for changing exhibitions of the museum. The upper floor is divided into two sections: in one half models and selected individual pieces tell of the geological history, the colonisation, the building of dykes and “Warften” (artificial residence mounds), storm tides, the way of living and a number of cultural characteristics of the island. The other section presents life in past and present times with the help of folkloric objects.
